Facade Fire Barriers for Mixed-Material Systems

When utilizing mixed-material facade systems that incorporate combustible or slow-burning materials (such as polymer insulation), there is a high risk of rapid flame propagation vertically between floors or horizontally along the building’s perimeter. Implementing reliable facade fire barriers is a mandatory structural measure that creates non-combustible blocks, localizing the fire and preventing its spread.

Stone Wool Boards

Industrial stone wool boards are high-performance insulation panels engineered for demanding applications. They are available in two distinct types based on density—115 kg/m³ and 160 kg/m³—each offering optimized technical properties to meet specific structural and thermal requirements.

The absolute non-combustibility of these industrial stone wool boards makes them the ideal solution for comprehensive thermal, acoustic, and fire insulation in high-temperature environments. They are widely deployed in industrial facilities, mechanical systems, and structural fireproofing assemblies where thermal stability and safety are critical

Lamella Insulation (Stone Wool)

Lamella facade insulation consists of rigid stone (basalt) wool boards where the mineral fibers are oriented perpendicularly to the facade surface. This advanced manufacturing technology ensures exceptionally high tensile strength (resistance to delamination), which is critical for securely holding heavy plaster, base coats, and cladding layers.

Engineered as high-performance thermal and fire protection boards, these lamellas are specifically designed to maximize the structural fire safety and energy efficiency of modern buildings.

Lamella stone wool is utilized in external thermal insulation composite systems with a plaster finish (ETICS) and specialized fire protection assemblies:

  • Structural Fire Protection: Securing columns, beams, and floor slabs in facilities with stringent fire safety regulations, including underground parkings, basements, shopping malls, and residential complexes.
  • Heavy Tile Cladding (Core Advantage): Due to its superior tensile strength delivered by perpendicular fiber orientation, lamella insulation serves as the ideal substrate for heavy decorative finishes, such as clinker tiles, ceramic cladding, or artificial stone. This guarantees that heavy cladding remains permanently and safely anchored to the facade.
  • Dowelfree Installation (Under Specific Conditions): Thanks to the material’s high mechanical strength, the boards can be installed using only the adhesive method (without mechanical anchors/dowels) in approved systems, significantly accelerating the installation process.
  • Insulation of Curved Surfaces: Due to its inherent architectural flexibility, lamella boards can seamlessly conform to rounded facades and complex geometric structures without sacrificing fire protection integrity.

System Purpose

he primary objective of facade fire barriers is to compartmentalize facade systems into separate, non-combustible fire zones.

  • Flame Localization: Creating non-combustible barriers to prevent flames from traveling from a lower floor to upper levels through the facade framework.
  • Opening Protection: Preventing fire and toxic combustion products from penetrating window and door openings on upper floors during a fire on lower levels.
  • Code Compliance: Ensuring that building facade assemblies fully comply with national building codes (DBN) regarding structural fire resistance and fire hazard mitigation.

Areas of Application

Structural facade fire barriers are mandatory components in mixed-material exterior insulation systems (such as ETICS) and ventilated facades:

  • High-Fire-Risk Buildings: High-rise and multi-story residential complexes, public spaces, corporate offices, and shopping malls where combustible insulation is present.
  • Window and Door Perimeters: Mandatory framing around all openings to shield the building’s interior from external fire exposure.
  • Inter-Floor Compartmentalization: Horizontal facade fire barriers installed at floor slab levels to block fire from jumping from floor to floor along the exterior wall.
  • Perimeter Zoning: Strategic horizontal and vertical barriers designed to divide the facade into isolated fire compartments.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are strategically positioned across critical areas of the building envelope:

  • Horizontally: At the level of inter-floor slabs (between stories) to prevent vertical flame propagation.
  • Perpendicularly/Around Perimeters: Encasing window and door openings to protect the building’s interior from external fire exposure.
  • Vertically: To partition the facade into isolated zones or compartments on exceptionally large wall surface areas.
